What is a Shacket?
How to Style an Overshirt

Not quite a shirt, not quite a jacket, a shacket sits comfortably somewhere in between, giving you an easy extra layer when a T-shirt feels too light but a full coat feels like overkill.

From lightweight cotton overshirts to heavyweight borg-lined shackets, here’s how to choose the right style, wear it well and make it work throughout the seasons.

What is a shacket or overshirt?

A shacket is a cross between a shirt and a jacket. It has the familiar shape of a button-up shirt, but is usually made from a heavier fabric so it can be worn as an outer layer.

The terms shacket and overshirt are often used interchangeably. Both describe the same general category of clothing: a relaxed layer designed to be worn over a T-shirt, graphic tee or vest.

Some styles feel more shirt-like, while heavyweight or borg-lined designs lean closer to a jacket. Either way, the appeal is the same. They’re easy to throw on, simple to style and ideal for unpredictable weather.

Different types of men’s shackets and overshirts

The right shacket depends on when and where you plan to wear it.

Cotton and Linen Overshirts

Cotton and linen shacket styles are lighter and more breathable. They’re ideal for spring and summer evenings.

These lighter overshirts can be worn open like a casual shirt or fastened up when the breeze picks up. Choose between button-up and popper-fastening shackets, depending on your personal style.

Checked, Flannel and Brushed Overshirts

A checked overshirt is a natural choice for relaxed weekend dressing. Flannel and brushed fabrics have a soft, warm hand feel, making them perfect for autumn

Wear yours open over a plain T-shirt or graphic tee for an easy layered look. Or when the temperature drops, button it up and add a coat over the top.

Borg-Lined Shackets

For colder weather, a borg-lined shacket offers a warmer, more substantial layer. The soft lining helps hold in heat, while the overshirt shape keeps the look relaxed.

This is the style to reach for in winter, especially when you want something warmer than a standard cotton overshirt but easier to wear than a bulky coat.

When to wear a shacket or overshirt

  • At the weekend, wear a checked or flannel overshirt with a T-shirt and pair it with your favourite jeans.
  • For countryside walks, choose a warmer or borg-lined style for added warmth, especially if the weather is a little brisk and pair with comfortable cargos
  • Shackets can also work for smart-casual plans. Pair yours with a plain T-shirt and chinos and smart shoes for an outfit that feels considered without looking overdone.

How to choose the right shacket fabric and weight

Shackets range from light, shirt-like layers to heavier autumn and winter options. Choosing the right weight makes all the difference.

  • A lightweight cotton or linen overshirt is best for spring and summer. It adds an extra layer without trapping too much heat, so it works well over a T-shirt on cooler mornings or evenings.
  • Checked flannel and brushed cotton overshirts offer a little more warmth. They’re a good middle ground for September and October, when the weather can change from one hour to the next.
  • From November onwards, look for heavyweight or borg-lined shackets. These styles provide more insulation and can be worn as an outer layer on milder days. Or when it gets really cold, they can also sit underneath a puffer coat

How to wear a shacket

The easiest way to wear a shacket is over a T-shirt. Keep it open for a relaxed feel, or button it up when you need more warmth.

  • For a casual weekend outfit, layer a checked or brushed overshirt over a plain or graphic tee and add denim. It’s simple, comfortable and always works.
  • To smarten things up, swap the denim for chinos and choose a clean cotton overshirt. Wearing it buttoned gives the outfit a slightly sharper finish, while leaving it open keeps things easy-going.
  • During colder months, use your shacket as a middle layer. Wear a T-shirt underneath, fasten the shacket and add a coat over the top.

Shacket styling top tips

Shackets generally look best worn untucked, as they’re designed to sit over the rest of your outfit. For a cleaner silhouette, tuck in the T-shirt underneath and leave the overshirt open. This creates a little structure without making the outfit feel too formal.

Button, popper and zip-up shackets can all be worn open or closed. Open feels more casual; fully fastened feels warmer and slightly more polished.
